The first letter was waiting on the doormat when Ifeoma Nwachukwu carried the last box up the stairs.
It lay face down on the tiles, a cream envelope with a slightly curled corner, as if it had been waiting a long time. She set the box on the sofa, wiped her forehead with the back of her wrist, and picked it up. The Yaba heat was merciless. The flat was two rooms and a kitchen, third floor, with a window that looked out on a mango tree and a wall painted with a faded advertisement for powdered milk. It was the cheapest place she had found. She had signed the lease that morning.
The envelope was addressed in a neat, slanted hand. Miss Amara Okoro. Flat 6, 14 Herbert Macaulay Way, Yaba, Lagos. There was a Port Harcourt postmark.
"Not mine," she told the empty room.
She was about to drop it into the bin when she noticed the back flap. It was not sealed. Someone had tucked it shut but never pressed it down. Through the gap, she could see the edge of a folded page.
About this story
When Ifeoma Nwachukwu moves into a tiny flat in Yaba, she finds a letter on the doormat addressed to a stranger named Amara. It is the third that month, handwritten and tender, from a man in Port Harcourt who signs himself only Chidi. Against her better judgement she writes back. What follows is a year of letters between two strangers, full of jokes, grief and small kindnesses, and a secret that Chidi has been carrying since the day his sister died.
