A lot has happened in dating in the last two weeks. Here is the short version, with what each story means if you're single in Nigeria or elsewhere in West Africa. Sources are linked where we have them.

1. Bumble is being sold

Bumble agreed to be acquired by Ithaca Holdings for 1.3 billion dollars and will go private, according to TechCrunch. Its paying users fell 16.4 percent to around 3.2 million in the second quarter. Our longer take is in the Bumble acquisition story.

Why it matters: the swipe model is losing steam. Look for apps that help you meet.

2. The US passes a romance scam law

Dating apps in the United States will have to warn users who messaged an account later banned for fraud. See the Romance Scam Prevention Act.

Why it matters: it raises expectations everywhere about how seriously apps take scams.

3. The UK tightens subscription rules

Global Dating Insights reported on 24 October that draft UK rules from 2027 will require dating apps to send renewal reminders and make cancelling easy.

Why it matters: if you pay for any dating app, check how easy it is to cancel before you subscribe. On MyPerson, the contact page explains how to cancel Premium.

4. People are forming attachments to AI

On 25 and 26 October, Global Dating Insights reported that some adults are treating Meta's Muse AI assistant as a romantic partner, and that a sharing flaw exposed 6,800 chats, after which Meta paused chat sharing. Separately, Character.AI is being sold in bankruptcy, with Disney bidding 20 million dollars for a licence to its technology.

Why it matters: AI can feel caring, but it isn't a person. Read our piece on AI companions.

5. Singles want real life

A Match Group study found nearly half of UK singles say connecting has never been harder, and other reports show more people turning to in person events. Read why singles are leaving swipe apps.

Why it matters: events, calls and group dates are becoming the main attraction.

6. Tinder moves toward safety and events

At its Sparks keynote, Tinder announced Face Check, video speed dating and an Events tab. Details in our Tinder summary.

What to do with all this

  • Choose platforms that verify members.
  • Use calls before meetings.
  • Go to events when you can.
  • Never send money to anyone you haven't met.
  • Treat AI as a tool, not a partner.
