Dating Through Instagram DMs and WhatsApp: Why It Goes Wrong

Sliding into DMs feels easy, but it hides risks. Here is what goes wrong, and a safer way to meet people with real intent.

Plenty of Nigerian relationships begin in someone's DMs. A like on a picture, a short message, a reply. It's easy, it's free and everyone is there already.

So why do so many of these conversations end badly?

You don't know who is on the other end

Anyone can make an Instagram account in five minutes. Photos can be copied. A name can be invented. Without verification, you can't be sure you are talking to the person in the pictures. Romance scammers love DMs for this reason.

Intent is unclear

On a dating app, everyone knows why they are there. In DMs, a message might be flirting, friendship, a business pitch or something else. You waste days trying to work out what the other person wants.

Pressure to move fast

Because DMs are private and personal, they can feel urgent. People ask for your number, your location, your pictures. Those requests come fast from the wrong people.

Mixed audiences

A man might be messaging five women at once. A woman might be talking to several men. Nobody sees the others. This isn't always dishonest, but it makes serious dating harder.

Money asks and fake opportunities

Many scams begin in DMs: investment schemes, gift cards, "I want to send you a package". Read how to spot dating scams.

No tools for protection

Reporting on social platforms is slow and generic. There is no way to see whether the person is verified. There is no way to ask a moderator about a profile.

What works better

  • Use a platform where people sign up to date. Intent is clear from the first message.
  • Check for a verified badge.
  • Move to a free voice or video call quickly, inside the app, before sharing any number.
  • Keep your social handles private until you trust the person.
  • Meet in public with a friend in the loop.

On MyPerson, you can chat, call, play games and join groups without sharing your phone number or Instagram first. That keeps you in control.

Why people stay anyway

It feels natural. You already know the person's face, their friends and their posts, and that makes trust come quickly. But a feed is a highlight reel. It shows you what someone wants you to see, not how they treat people, and a polished page can hide someone who is married, dishonest or simply not interested in anything serious.

If you're already in a DM conversation

You can keep it going, but treat it with the same caution. Ask for a video call early. Look at how old their account is and who follows them. Never send money.
