How MyPerson Discover Works: Filter by State, Tribe, Intent

On most dating apps, the first screen is a stack of strangers and a hope that something clicks.

That works in countries where people more or less share a background. Nigeria isn't one of them. We have more than 250 ethnic groups, strong faiths, family expectations that arrive uninvited, and very different ideas about what a relationship is for. A card with a nice smile doesn't tell you any of that.

Discover on MyPerson was built to deal with exactly this. Here is how it works.

The basics

Discover is where you browse members near you. Each card shows a profile with photos, some details and what the person says they're looking for. Like someone and if they like you back, it's a match and you can chat. Open the full profile if you want to know more. Pass if it isn't for you.

The filters, and why they exist

• State. All 36 and the FCT. If you're in Port Harcourt and the app shows you people in Kano, you've wasted an evening.
• Tribe. Some people don't care at all. Some want someone who speaks their language and understands their customs. Neither is wrong, and a filter beats finding out on date three.
• Religion. For a lot of Nigerians faith decides everything, especially when marriage is the plan.
• Age. Obvious, but set a range that reflects what you want.
• What they want. Friendship, a serious relationship, marriage. This one saves the most heartbreak.

Don't tighten everything at once

A mistake we see a lot: someone sets all five filters to exactly what they imagine, sees six profiles, and decides the app is dead.

Start with the two that are truly non negotiable. For most people that's intent plus religion, or intent plus state. Loosen the rest. Come back in a week, because new people join every day.

A filter only works if the other profile is honest

So make yours honest too. Add real photos, answer the prompts, write down what you're after. You can answer up to three prompts in text or record a 30 second voice answer, which is surprisingly effective because people hear you're real. Our guide on writing a profile that gets matches goes deeper.

Small habits that help

Reply within a day or two. Refresh your photos now and then. Verify your profile, because people trust a badge. If you want a lift, a profile boost puts you in front of more people for 30 minutes.

Can I hide from certain people? Block anyone you don't want to see you. Paid members can also browse in private mode.

I only see a few people. Why? Your filters are probably too tight. Loosen one.
