Translation and automatic tools
How message translation and app languages work, in plain words.
Message translation is in beta
Translate is an automatic tool. It can get words, slang and tone wrong, especially for Pidgin, Twi and other Nigerian and African languages. Do not rely on it for money, health, legal or safety matters. If something matters, ask the person to confirm in their own words.
Who can use it
Premium Plus members. Free and Premium members see an upgrade card when they tap Translate. There is a daily limit per member to keep the service fair.
What we send out
When you tap Translate on a message, only that one message text is sent to an automatic translation service (a free AI model through OpenRouter, or MyMemory as a backup) so it can be translated. We do not send your name, photos, phone number or email with it.
What we keep
We save the translated text next to the original so the same message is not translated again. We do not use it to build a profile of you. You can ask us to delete your data any time from Delete account or by writing to support.
What stays private
Photos, voice notes, view-once photos, gifts and game messages are never translated. The other person is not told that you translated their message.
App languages
The language switch in Settings changes the words the app itself uses. It runs on your phone from files we ship, so nothing you write is sent anywhere. Some languages are marked beta because a native speaker has not finished checking them. Tell us at support if you spot a mistake.
Be kind
Translation does not change our rules. Harassment, scams and abuse are still reported and acted on, in any language.
