Dating Apps in Ghana: Bumble, Tinder, Badoo and MyPerson

Which dating apps do Ghanaians actually download? A plain comparison of Bumble, Tinder, Badoo, MeetMe and MyPerson.

If you open the App Store in Accra and look at what's popular for dating, you won't find many surprises. You'll find the same names you'd find in London or Johannesburg.

Sensor Tower's Q1 2025 list of top iOS dating downloads in Ghana put Bumpy, Tinder, Bumble, Badoo and MeetMe in the top five. A separate SagaPoll survey of 13,557 people in 27 African countries, with fieldwork in October 2024, named Bumble as popular in Ghana. Across the continent, a Statista based ranking reported by African Mirror gave Tinder about 32 percent share, Badoo 12 percent and Bumble 8 percent.

So Ghanaians use the global names. The more useful question is whether those apps work for what Ghanaians want.

What the big names do well

Tinder. Largest pool, familiar swipe. Good for casual dating and meeting people outside your circle. Less good at knowing what you want from a partner beyond looks.

Bumble. Women make the first move, which many women like. Popular in Ghana according to the survey. Its sales, subscribers and strategy are in flux, as we covered in the Bumble acquisition story.

Badoo. Mixes dating with social networking and chat. Large in francophone countries too.

MeetMe. More social discovery than dating, with chat and live features.

What they don't do

Most Ghanaians say, in survey after survey, that they trust friends and family introductions more than apps, and a major reason is fake profiles. Global apps rarely give you:

  • Tools designed around Ghanaian and West African expectations: family, faith, marriage intent.
  • An easy way to filter by region within Ghana.
  • A reason to move from chat to an actual meeting, like events, venues or a meetup pledge.
  • Support that knows where you are.

Where MyPerson is different

You can join from Ghana, set your country and region, and filter by age, religion and what someone wants. Members can verify with a selfie and ID to earn a badge. Voice and video calls cost nothing, which cuts the catfish problem. There are events, hangouts, a free arcade with Whot, Ludo and Ayo, and the SafeDate pledge for meeting up. The features page has the full list.

We should be honest: MyPerson started in Nigeria and its biggest community is there, so the Ghana pool grows as more people join. If you want the largest crowd today, a global app may show you more faces. If you want verification, calls and tools built to end in a real date, try both and compare.

Quick comparison

  • Pool size in Ghana: biggest on Tinder and Bumble, growing on MyPerson.
  • Verification: varies by app. MyPerson offers selfie and ID with a badge.
  • Free calls: MyPerson, yes. Many others, not as a core feature.
  • Meeting tools: MyPerson has events, venues and SafeDate.
