Dating Apps Nigerians Download: What the Data Shows

Tinder, Dating.com, MiChat, Hugmi. Which apps do Nigerians really install, and are they the same as dating apps?

Here's something that surprised us.

Sensor Tower's list of top five dating category apps in Nigeria for the fourth quarter of 2025 didn't read like a list of dating apps. By reported peak downloads it went Hugmi (around 104,000 in late October), MiChat (about 56,000 in early December), Tinder (about 46,000), Chat Online: Talkie Live (22,000 to 44,000 over the quarter) and LiveUp (about 31,000 in the final week of December).

Only one of those is what most people picture when they hear "dating app".

What that tells us

Nigerians are using chat and live video apps as dating apps. They want to talk to someone new tonight, often on a video call, and they don't always want to commit to a profile with prompts and filters.

A SagaPoll survey of 13,557 people in 27 African countries found something similar in spirit: 43 percent of app users said they were mostly after new friends and 35 percent were curious, rather than strictly romance. It also named Dating.com as strong in Nigeria, with Tinder dominating English speaking East and Southern Africa.

What chat apps give you

  • Quick conversation, often with strangers.
  • Live video and voice.
  • Low barrier to entry.

What they don't

  • Much protection from scams. Plenty of fake accounts, bots and people who vanish.
  • A way to tell what someone is looking for.
  • Any link to real life: events, venues, a reason to meet.
  • A way to know if the person is who they say.

None of that makes them bad. It just means they're for a different job. If you want to pass an evening, great. If you want a partner, you need more structure.

Where each fits

Chat and live apps (MiChat, Hugmi, Talkie, LiveUp): casual conversation and entertainment.

Global dating apps (Tinder, Bumble, Badoo, Dating.com): dating, with a global user base and mixed results for Nigerian specific needs.

MyPerson: built for Nigeria. Filters for state, tribe, religion and intent. Free voice and video calls, so you get the instant conversation people want from chat apps, but with verified members, a badge, events and SafeDate. There are live rooms too, if you like watching and hosting.

Checking any of them

Run the ten point checklist. And whatever app you use, don't send money to anyone you haven't met. Our scam guide explains why.
